Keurig K-Mini K15 Pod Coffee Maker – A Personal Machine of Self-Serving

The K-Mini is the standard of a personal coffee machine, in the sense that in any capacity, you can literally make no more than one cup at once. Many single coffee machines are serving huge lakes of filters, but water is actually going dry, resulting in a less satisfying cup of coffee. The K-mini leaves no space to this — only 10 oz. Water fits into the “reservoir,” leading users to fill the reservoir with exactly what they plan to use that minute.

Pop in any of the K-cup options available on the market, and this puppy will brew fast, finished in just 120 seconds with a single button press — brew. However, what makes it so simple and straightforward also removes the finer details of making a cup of coffee, such as brewing time and temperature, as well as any kind of auto-programming, which is the primary deficiency of this model.  In certain cases, including the 90-second auto shut-off feature and its compact size, the same technology that makes the K-Mini great also makes it a little frustrating.

Easy to use

Lets just say it: anyone that looks at a Keurig is looking for some extent of convenience. The hope is that the manual will be an optional read — you just plug it in and walk away with a nice cup of coffee five minutes later. Keurigs are designed to be easy to use.

Of course, the K-Mini wont be disappointed in that aspect. The machine features exactly two buttons — one to turn on and off the machine, and one to start the brewing process, so no “wrong” button found. The top of the machine flips up to 10 oz. of water, pop in a K-cup, and youre ready to go.  The K-Mini is also designed to be portable in a unique way, which is great for frequent travelers as well as individuals who spend different seasons in different locations. The cord retracts for fast storage inside the machine s body. This little coffee maker is easy to tote even in a carry-on bag with a dimension of 11.1 inches (12.8 with the K-cup lid up) and a weight of just over 6.5 pounds.  Also, The removable drip tray is made to enable a full 10 oz—cup of coffee. For larger travel mugs, you can also go without a drip tray, though keep in mind that this little machine maxes out at 5.2 inches.

Design

Despite its compact size, the K-Mini K15 keeps its much larger brethren sleek, display-capable looks. With 7.5 inches wide and 10.5 inches deep, the K-Mini will not take any substantial pace on your counter. This miniature is fitted with the same flip-top compartment for K-cups, and the soothing blue LED lighting around the “Brew” button.

The familiar style and good appearance make it meaningless that the body is made from plastic. However, most Keurigs have plastic body parts, so its no surprise the encasement on the K-Mini. Like their kin, the K-Mini feels sturdy and has the right heft-to-size ratio, so it doesnt feel cheap. You can buy it in ten different colors as well, so it will match whatever type of area you place in.

Capability

You are looking at the wrong model if you are looking for a lot of customizability. Look at some of the other popular names in the Keurig lineup — youll find there more features to fawn over.

The fact is, the Keurig K-Mini was designed to do just one thing: brew coffee using whatever water you pour in, and thats exactly what it does. The grip on the lack of temperature regulation and brew time means that there is some sort of fundamental confusion on what the K-Mini is for: only making a cup of coffee. The fact is that most people are not doing a ton of fiddling with those features, but its nice to have them available, yeah, sure.  However, one feature the K-Mini does have is auto-shut-off. Although auto shut-off is nowadays an almost universal feature on coffee makers, most fall into the range of 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, which might seem a little excessive depending on what sort of coffee drinker you are. After 90 seconds, the K-Mini automatically turns off, which can cut off your electricity bill some excess, and its an environmentally friendly feature for sure. However, if you have several coffee drinkers in the household, it can feel a bit pointless, turning the machine on every 1.5 minutes, but its not like theres any water in the reservoir to keep it warm, right? We are going to call the odd little feature a moot point.

Technically, when it comes to capability, the K-Mini can “just” brew K-cups, but its kind of something like an it-can-only-promise-to-brew-K-cup. Usually, you can get away with using whatever pods you want to pop in there. But there are more than 400 varieties of K-cups, including Green Mountain, Donut Shop, Krispy Kreme coffee, and so many more, making variety not really the problem — its the brand tax youll end up spending on them. Theres no doubt that K-cups are costly. But shameless plug, you can take your pick from any of the available reusable K-cup choices that are both environmentally friendly and economically viable!

Taste test

The fact of the matter is, the taste is really good. Keurigs are doing a pretty good job of cranking out extremely portable coffee. We can mess over temperature control, but the basic settings for most regular brews on an out-of-the-box Keurig machine are pretty spot-on.  The only area we can get a little bit spotty on taste is the 10 oz. Right to cup. Though the 6 oz. hot and strong brews, a 10 oz. also brews hot option but definitely not as strong. The K-Mini does not quite have the means to lengthen the brewing time while handling larger cup sizes, a problem that is not as prevalent on larger Keurig versions (although often still noticeable).

The K-Mini K15 Versus The Gloridea Single-Serve Coffee Machine

After taking a look at the Gloridea it is hard to qualify to buy the K-Mini K15. I was going to save that for the hard-hitting finish, but even a small league has a rule of slaughter, right?

The Gloridea can brew K-cups, plus all knock-offs of the competitors, as well as any ground bean that you see fit. Just select your desired type of brew, and youre good to go. It can also brew a bunch of cup sizes, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 ounces, surpassing the K-Mini by two cup options, but, again, it has the same brew-the-amount-you-fill mentality. It also features a removable drip tray but upsets the ante by incorporating a removable water reservoir for easy cleaning and refilling.  You can start the auto-clean function by pressing any two buttons (a feature that is completely missing from the K-Mini), and it is more than two inches shorter than the K-Mini! Clocking in at a 5.2-inch wide frame, it is about half an inch wider at 11.6 inches in height, but it takes the cake totally far — at just 7.3 inches deep, it is three inches shallower than the K-Mini.  The Gloridea isnt offering the same customizability as larger models can, but it just offers enough to outshine the K-Mini while being decidedly minier in some way.

The K-Mini K15 Versus CHULUX Single-Serve Coffee Maker

The CHULUX single-serve coffee maker clocks in size closer to the Gloridea than it does to the K-Mini K15 in another case where something is minier without having the designation in the name.
Keurig KMini K15 Pod Coffee Maker review 8
The CHULUX is 4.3 “in width, (7.5” in-depth, and 9.8 “in height. Depending on the size of your travel mug, the height can be a bit of a problem, so whip out a measuring tape and see what youre looking at.  The CHULUX is, either way, a very small machine with a weight of an incredibly light 2.2 lbs, making it more than perfect for traveling. The CHULUX touts having a single-touch operation, and they mean that. Pop with some grounds into the coffee capsule or filter, pour in the desired quantity of water up to 12 ounces, and hit one button exactly. There isnt another one. Just one. As well, it shuts off automatically right after finishing brewing.  While the CHULUX has no additional standout features, it is more compact than the K-Mini K15, making it more ideal for traveling, it can brew a 12 oz. Cupa, and its considerably cheaper, all of which I think is worth considering. Nevertheless, its likely inability to handle travel mugs, which makes it a less desirable option for some, so be aware that space on the CHULUX is super-limited on height-wise.

Conclusion

The Keurig K-Mini K15 Pod Coffee Maker is a stripped-down version of the larger models and, in some ways, will force you to create better coffee by requiring freshwater and refusing to let you sit on a burner with coffee. It restricts the way you brew in other ways — no temperature regulation, no automated programming, and no brew power.  Consider your options, including looking at the new-and-slightly-improved Keurig K-Mini and Keurig K-Mini Plus, both featuring pod holders, slimmer figures, and can make up to 12 ounces of cups.

Ultimately, it depends only on what youre looking for, but when it comes to making the perfect joe cup for your morning type, its always worth keeping your options open.
